Encino residents and community leaders gathered in front of Van Nuis City Hall on Thursday to demand city officials address rising public safety concerns following the recent break-in and double murder.
“We don’t want miracles… just modern tools and accountability,” said Roy Nwaisser, president of the Encino Neighborhood Council.
Earlier this month, “American Idol” executive Robin Kay and her husband Thomas DeLuka were killed at Encino’s home by intruders. The murder, along with a surge in home robbery, prompted a meeting between Los Angeles Mayor Karen Basu and city councillor Nitya Raman on Thursday night.
“We need a reset. People are afraid, they are angry… and it’s our role to lead that rage and fear into constructive collaborations with elected city officials and LAPD.”

LAPD responded to crime spikes by increasing patrols in the area.
Residents recently expressed concern at the Community Safety Town Hall, urging the mayor to act immediately. They presented action items to the city, including a reporting center that tracks crime in real time, drone surveillance, and an increasing law enforcement patrol, a reporting center that tracks automated license plate readers.
Meanwhile, the mayor’s office said the city has already implemented many requests and is working to step up collaboration with the Sheriff’s Robbery Task Force, citing a decline in murder over the past six years.
Encino resident Adam Wright highlighted the urgency of the situation.
“We will require elected officials to take immediate action, enforce existing laws and clear the camp,” Wright told KTLA.
