Encino residents demanded that officials take action following the murder of “American Idol” executives and husband earlier this month, followed by a rash of invasion.
More than 500 people packed the Encino Community Center on Monday night, sharing ongoing criminal activity and frustration, including five intrusions over the past 12 days.
“Why should we die in order to hold such a meeting?” One woman at the meeting mentioned the murder of television executive Robin Kay and her husband Thomas Deluca, where the bodies were found on July 14th.
The break-in is believed to have occurred on July 10th as the couple was back home and caught a robber under the law. Investigators believe the suspect shot the couple with their own guns during a violent struggle.
Community dissatisfaction was directed at Captain Michael Brand of the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman.
According to LAPD, violent crime has declined in the area year-over-year, but additional patrols have been requested between 7pm and 7am.
Hochman has promised to increase criminal accountability.
“My goal is to stop criminals from committing crimes in the first place, and therefore save many victims in the process,” Hochman said. “To stop criminals, [they] You need to understand that if they commit a crime, there is some degree of certainty that they will be arrested and put to trial. ”
Two more intrusions were reported Monday night. This includes one of the 4,500 blocks of Heevenhardt Avenue, where family members were believed to be at home when the suspect broke into the garage before fleeing to an unknown vehicle.
The second robbery call occurred in the 4900 block of Enfield Avenue, but it was unclear if anything had been taken.
No injuries were reported in either case.
