Actor Eric Dane is open about his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS diagnosis.
Dane, who famously played Dr. Mark’s “Maxtymy” Dr. Sloan in “Grey’s Anatomy,” spoke emotionally about her journey with Diane Sawyer on ABC.
“I woke up every day and immediately reminded me of this happening,” he told Sawyer in a teaser clip released on June 12th. “That’s not a dream.”
The full interview with Dane and Sawyer will air on June 16th on Good Morning America.
“I don’t think this is the end of my story. I don’t think this is the end of me,” he explained.
The “Euphoria” star revealed his diagnosis to People Magazine in April.
“I was diagnosed with ALS,” he said. “As I navigate this next chapter, I am grateful that my beloved family is by my side.”
The Cleveland Clinic website states that “conditions that affect how neurons communicate with your muscles” are ALS, a neurogenetic disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It leads to worsening muscle weakness over time and there is currently no treatment.
According to the Mayo Clinic website, the causes of ALS are still being studied, but it is believed that around 10% of cases are passed down through genetics.
“Researchers continue to study possible causes of ALS. Most theories concentrate on the complex interactions between genes and environmental factors,” claims the site.
Despite the diagnosis, the 52-year-old is set to return as Calja Cobbs for the next third season of “Euphoria.”
Dane is married to actress Rebecca Gayhart. They have two teenage daughters.
