First on FOX: Army veteran and former federal prosecutor Eric Flores launched a Republican campaign for the Republican Congress on Monday in the main battlefield home district at the southern tip of Texas.

“We need politicians and more fighters who put our community first,” Flores said in a video first shared with Fox News Digital.

He vowed, “In Congress, I will stand up to President Trump and fight and deliver to South Texas every day.”

Flores operates in Texas’s 34th Congressional District, and runs along the Gulf Coast from just south of Corpus Christi to the border with Mexico. It includes Brownsville and extends westward to include part of McAllen.

The district is one of 26 targeted by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) in the 2026 medium-term elections as House GOP campaign division defends a thin majority of the party’s razors in the room.

The district is heading to the right, which appears to be a major pick-up for Republicans. Former President Joe Biden carried the district with 15 points in the 2020 White House race. Four years later, President Donald Trump scored nearly five points in the district.

But Democrats carried the district in last year’s Senate elections. Current Former Rep. Colin Allred (who runs again in the Senate in 2026) is six points ahead of Senator Ted Cruz.

Republicans consider incumbent Democrat Vicente Gonzalez a vulnerable. Gonzalez, who was in his fifth term in Congress, defeated former GOP Rep. Meira Flores in the 2022 and 2024 elections, but his victory in keeping the district last November was just 2.5 points.

Meeting NRCC officials, Flores is a Spanish speaker who grew up in the Rio Grande Valley.

He was delegated to the US military as an infantry officer and rose to the rank of captain. He served in the Texas Army National Guard and commanded soldiers during a protection support operation along the US southern border with neighboring Mexico.

Flores is also a former US lawyer and helps prosecute cartel-connected human trafficking practices. His campaign biographies also point out that Flores has “secured the conviction of one of the most tired fugitives in Texas’s ‘top ten’.

Flores, who served as a local government judge in Alton, Texas, is currently a partner in law firms across the state, leading the litigation division and defends Texas municipalities and school districts. He is married and a father of two children.

“Every day, you can see how broken policies hurt our community,” Flores said. “All is enough. Politicians put themselves first and the valley is left behind.”

Flores said, “President Trump stood up against insiders and fought for places like us: a community that career politicians have always forgotten. We cannot lose this opportunity, so that’s why I run for Congress.

Although several other Republicans are running in the district’s GOP primary next March, Flores is considered the only major Republican candidate.
