Eric Menendez is about to be released from prison after receiving serious medical treatment prior to next month’s parole hearing, his lawyer said this week.
Attorney Mark Geragos declined to share the specifics of the 54-year-old’s condition in an interview with TMZ. However, sources familiar with Eric’s treatment told him at a time when he suffered from severe kidney stones and complications that resulted from the condition.
Jelagos did not immediately respond to a text message from the Times on Tuesday seeking comment.
Geragos told TMZ he would ask Gov. Gavin Gavin Newsom to release Erik just before the appearance of his brother before the parole committee.
“It’s a serious situation and I think he needs to go out so he can concentrate on the hearing,” Geragos told TMZ, adding that he thinks it’s “proper” to release him early.
Eric Menendez and his brother Lyle spent more than 35 years in prison in 1989 for the murder of his parents. Over the past year, it has attracted public attention following Netflix’s Monster: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and various documentaries releases.
The brothers were given the opportunity to freedom in May when a LA County judge granted their request to resent.
The Michael Jessick Court’s decision to declare his brothers 50 years of life came after hours of testimony from a family who said the brothers had spent plenty of time behind the bar due to the brutal murder of their parents. The brothers served the conditions of life without the possibility of parole.
If the Parole Board recommends that the sibling be released in August, the decision will be sent to Newsom for consideration.
