The South Los Angeles gang leader, accused of acting as a community activist while running a criminal enterprise, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to numerous federal charges including assault, murder, horror and fraud.
Eugene “Big U” Henry Jr., 58, of the Southla community in Hyde Park, first appeared in court Tuesday in downtown Los Angeles.
Longtime leader of Rollin ’60s South La Gang, Henley was charged after authorities accused him of identifying “mafia-like” criminal activity in court documents as a massive company and was given the benefit of Henry’s relationship with the gang.
Authorities say Henry received a charity grant from a government agency and was later converted to a criminal enterprise.
Federal prosecutors added that there is a possible cause for them to believe Eugene “Big Woo” Henry Jr. killed a man named Rayshaun Williams in Las Vegas and dragged him in the desert.
According to court documents, Williams was an artist on Henry’s label, UNEEK Music. After Williams wrote the song for “This” Henry, the gang leader retaliated and murdered Williams, prosecutors said.
Additionally, Henry is suspected of filing a fraudulent application for a Covid-19 pandemic relief loan for UNEEK music.
If convicted, he could be eligible for life sentence as his trial is scheduled to begin on May 20th.
