“Euphoria” star Hunter Schafer, one of Hollywood’s most prominent transgender women, revealed that a male gender marker was issued on her new passport on Friday.
In an 8-minute video, she posted on Tiktok’s story, and the actor best known for playing The Transgender High School student Jules in the hit HBO series marked herself as a woman in the passport application He said. Schafer, 26, added that since she was a teenager, the gender marker for her government-issued ID is a woman.
Schafer’s passport application opposes the recently implemented State Department guidance that uses gender assigned at birth to determine gender markers in newly issued passports. Schafer said she was aware of the policy, but she didn’t expect it to be implemented.
“Trans people are beautiful. We’re never going to stop being. I’m not going to stop being a trance,” she said. “Letters and passports cannot change that. And f—this administration.”
She added that she did not post the video to “create a drama” or “receive comfort.”
“I don’t need that, but I think it’s worth posting to be aware of the reality of the situation and what’s really happening,” Schafer said. “And I was shocked. I didn’t, I was shocked, I don’t know. I didn’t think it would actually happen.”
Representatives from the State Department and the White House did not immediately return requests for comment.
Schafer said she is scheduled to travel abroad next week and “is worried that she will have to put herself out of the border patrol” for other trans people in a similar scenario.
In addition to the new State Department policy on passports, President Donald Trump has signed several executive orders on transgender Americans in recent weeks. The measures include restrictions on trans girls and women playing school sports teams, banning transgender people from joining the military and serving openly, and related to transition for Americans under the age of 19. Includes restrictions on access to care.
