Fire officials said the Huntington Beach garage started to burn when its electric vehicle charging system “misfunctioned” over the weekend.
“Thanks to our prompt response from the Huntington Beach fire, the fire was included in the garage and prevented further damage,” the Huntington Beach Fire Department posted on Instagram on Wednesday.
There were no reports of fire injuries, but authorities provided the following safety tips for those considering purchasing an electric vehicle:
Before purchasing an EV, have a qualified electrician install a dedicated circuit for the charger, as the wiring of the old home may not be appropriate. When claiming an EV, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and consult with the dealer if necessary. Uses charging devices certified by nationally recognized test labs. Plug Level I charger directly into the outlet and do not use extension cords or adapters. Install residual current devices to detect faults and prevent fires. When not in use, charge the components from the child’s range. Electric cars are seen after the fire in Huntington Beach. (Huntington Beach Fire Station)
“Take these precautions will help keep your home and family safe!” the fire department said.
