13-year-old friends and family, found dead in Oxnard last week, gathered at Sun Valley Park for his moment of honor.
Friday night meant Oscar Omar Hernandez’s soccer game at San Fernando Valley Park.
Many remembered teenagers as bright and friendly boys who never missed the chance to make you smile.
“I remember he was a really happy kid. He’s always going to make his friends laugh,” said Ruby Guerrero, Hernandez’s friend.
Hernandez’s girlfriend, Destiny Arteaga, said she plays football with her sister’s boyfriend and loves playing the goalkeeper position.
Hernandez was found dead last week near the road in Oxnard. On Monday, his soccer coach, Mario Edgardo Garcia Aquino, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of a young man.
Family friend Ivanna Garcia said her heart lies in the Hernandez family.
“They feel sad. They feel they should get more love from them because they know what their mother is going through,” Garcia said.
The Sun Valley Recreation Centre asked the crowd about moments of silence during tonight’s match.
One of the coordinators released a group of white balloons for Oscars ahead of the 3pm funeral mass and private burial on Saturday at the Immaculate Concentration of Mary Catholic Church in East Hollywood.
The family has launched a GoFundMe page to help with funeral costs.
