A distraught family in Orange County is demanding answers after saying their dog was shot multiple times by police last month.
The dog owner says he was responding to the house on July 30th, when officers shot the dog Max at least three times, due to a family conflict.
Surveillance video shared with NBC4 shows the police force lifted up in front of the Orange Avenue home. Shortly afterwards, the dog leaves with at least two people, and the police leave, pointing to what appears to be a dog’s gun.
“He comes out of the house and he’s very interested. Max is very interested. I don’t know if he felt that Max, his size, is being threatened, but he’s just starting to film,” Luz Vega said. “He didn’t give us the opportunity to let the dog inside.”
According to Natalie Garcia with the Santa Ana Police Department, the officer was attacked by a very aggressive dog, one of them drained a weapon.
“he [Max] He was offensive, no, he wasn’t. He’s never bitten anyone. He was always around kids, most of the kids,” Vega said.
Police say the dog was taken to the veterinary hospital in a stable condition but could not confirm how the shot was fired.
As a result of the injury, the family said they had to make the difficult decision to defeat Max.
The incident is under investigation. Santa Ana police say they are in contact with their families.
