The Los Angeles Unified School District has confirmed that Department of Homeland Security agents have appeared at two primary schools but are not allowed to enter.
In a message to the community earlier this week, Lausd said the two individuals had “identified themselves as representatives of federal agencies” and had entered the headquarters.
However, in both cases, the agent was told by the school administrator that he was unable to go to campus and could leave the area.
One of the schools was Lillian Street Elementary School in South Los Angeles, and the other was Russell Elementary School.
The message states, “We would like to reaffirm the district’s unwavering commitment to the well-being of all students and education. Please note that our website lausd.org/weareone is available 24/7 with resources for updating district policies and “right to know.” ”
A LAUSD spokesman said a preventive message was sent to other school communities regarding “reporting immigration enforcement activities.”
District officials did not say why the two federal officials were there.
In a partial statement, LAUSD principal Alberto Carvalho said, “Our school is a place of inspiration, protection, empathy and knowledge. Fear and threat are fulfilled with courage and determination.”
