A federal judge on Friday suspended the Trump administration’s efforts to deport eight migrants to South Sudan. This is the latest incident that tested the legality of the Trump administration’s push to ship ships to third countries.
Washington US District Judge Randolph Moss handed down the verdict on his July 4 holiday to give immigrants time to discuss Massachusetts courts.
Eight men from Cuba, Laos, Mexico, Burma, Sudan and Vietnam allegedly violated the constitutional law, which bans “cruel and unusual” punishment, Reuters reported. They have been convicted of various crimes, four of whom have been convicted of murder, the Department of Homeland Security said.

Instead of being brought back to the US, they were detained for six weeks at a military base in Djibouti.
On Thursday, immigrants filed new claims after a Boston federal judge said they could not request the Department of Homeland Security to retain them, Reuters reported.

Friday’s order will stop the US government from moving men until 4:30pm. They were scheduled to be moved to South Sudan on the 7pm flight.

During hearing Friday, government lawyers argued that the court’s order to halt the agreed deportation would pose serious issues to US diplomatic relations and would make foreign countries less likely to accept immigrant transfers in the future.
The incident is the latest development on the legality of the Trump administration’s campaign to block immigration by following transactions with other countries and shipping them to places outside their country of origin, according to Reuters.

“It seems almost obvious that the US government cannot take humans and send them to situations where their physical well-being simply punishes them or risks signaling others,” Moss said at the hearing.
