A judge on Monday temporarily blocked the Trump administration from stripping Medicaid funds from Plannado parents and children after Congress and President Donald Trump agreed to partially refund nonprofits through the passage of one big beautiful bill law.
Judge Indira Talwani of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts said the bill partially granted the preliminary injunction to punish planned parent-child membership organizations that do not illegally provide repeal.
Obama’s appointee Talwani wrote that the injunction “is the least harm (financial or otherwise) taking risks to the “financial administration” for the Trump administration while the lawsuit progresses.”

Talwani’s orders stemmed from a lawsuit brought by Planned Tourhood, the country’s largest abortion vendor. Trump signed the bill on July 4th.
The bill’s provisions stripped Medicaid funds from Plans Parenthood, which said it could force nonprofits to close around 200 of their 600 facilities and enforce about half of their customers (services that do not include abortions for more than 1 million people).
A Planned Parenthood lawyer said in a court declaration that Medicaid does not cover abortion.

The lawyers argued that no cancer or sexually transmitted diseases were detected and unplanned pregnancy occurred due to insufficient access to birth control, especially for low-income people. They said the consequences of losing Medicaid funds would be “a grave.”
Department of Justice (DOJ) attorneys previously argued in their court application that the purpose of the budget clause was to suspend “federal grants for major abortions” by freezing federal funds for certain Medicaid recipients offering abortions. The planned weakening of parent-child relationships was Roev by the Supreme Court. Since overturning Wade, it has been one of the major priorities of the pro-life movement.
Talwani granted a temporary restraining order in favour of Planned Parenthood two weeks ago. The judge initially refused to explain her decision. This has led to widespread backlash among Republicans who described it as an over-judicial act. A few days later, Talwani provided more context in the subsequent order.

The interim injunction leaves a suspension to reimburse planned parent-child relationships indefinitely, but the Trump administration could appeal the order to the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
DOJ’s lawyers previously argued to the court that blocking measures passed by Congress and signed by the President was an extraordinary move and unfair.

“Beyond the futility of merit claims, planned parent-child relationships fail to show any immediate and irreparable harm to justify the injunction and only claim potential harm unrelated to classically compensated economic injuries to patients, a third party not before this court,” a DOJ lawyer wrote.
