In an effort to combat child sexual exploitation, federal authorities will teach Los Angeles Unified School District students, staff and parents how to stay safe online.
A memorandum of understanding between the nation’s second-largest school district, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations was announced Friday.
HSI Los Angeles’ special agents, comprised primarily of the Child Exploitation Investigations Group, provide so-called iGuardian training. The training aims to educate participants about the dangers of online sex offenders and teach them how to avoid and report abuse. Officials said in a news release that the in-person training program is primarily focused on pre-teens and teenagers, but can also be tailored for younger children, staff and parents.
The program is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s national campaign to raise awareness about online child sexual exploitation, which the department calls a “rapidly growing threat.” The initiative also stems from the U.S. Department of Justice’s long-standing efforts to combat technology-facilitated sexual crimes against children.
