Many Southern Californians celebrated their July 4 holiday, but some were detained on Friday as part of an ongoing immigration enforcement by the Department of Homeland Security.
After choosing to open on the holidays, West Hollywood’s Santa Palm Car Wash visited from an agent with a bulletproof vest around 11am on Friday.
The business manager told NBC Los Angeles that agents came and went in 10 minutes and arrested people who had been working to wash cars for decades. It was not immediately clear how many people were taken into custody.
Another employee was tackled in a nearby alley, the manager said.
The man who refused to be identified said his father was someone detained by an agent.
“My father came to work today on July 4th. He loves his country. We were here as long as I was,” said the son.
“We came to see it ourselves and found his car here,” he said, explaining that his 65-year-old father had been working in the same car wash for 30 years. “(My father) is not a criminal. He did nothing he was supposed to do. He paid his bill on July 4th and worked to make some money to buy food.”
It was not immediately clear after the man’s father was taken into custody.
