The Federal Emergency Management Agency plans to hire more than 20 temporary workers to support fire recovery efforts in Southern California.
The agency announced the expanded workforce on Thursday, saying new employees will support both Eton and Palisades disaster areas.
Workers will be hired for four months and may likely extend employment if necessary, a FEMA spokesperson said.
The 26 positions are available in areas such as acquisitions, civil rights, diplomacy, disaster field training operations, hazard mitigation, HR, personal assistance, information technology, HR and other areas.
According to a statement from FEMA, the rapid employment process aims to quickly grow the workforce while ensuring that it benefits from local knowledge about recruitment from the Los Angeles area.
“Local hiring work is part of a rapid process that will help us grow the FEMA workforce quickly, while also helping to provide economic stimulation and good job opportunities for communities where jobs may have been lost due to the disaster,” FEMA spokesman La-Tanga said in a statement.
The recruitment pitch has pledged “many perks” of federal employment, including “good benefits, flexible work schedules, professional growth, stability, and opportunities for lateral movement across the agency.”
A nonprofit supporting federal agencies said employment could be hampered in the face of significant cuts in many federal agencies recently ordered by the Trump administration. Advocates said federal employment appears to be less stable than in any recent memory.
