Saturday’s Mass is to celebrate two Catholic traditions in the Philippines. Santa Cruzan and May flowers.
On Saturday, the Philippine Catholic community in Los Angeles was expected to celebrate the Virgin Mary and celebrate the flowering tradition in downtown Los Angeles.
This year, the Philippine ministry of Our Lady of Angels is celebrating the 20th Marian Santa Cruzang May, where faithful to traditional Filipino attire is expected to take part in the presentation of the “young girl” that constitutes the court of honor in the honor of the blessed Maria.
The queue was set to begin at 2:30pm with a celebration mass at 2:00pm
“The “Celebration-themed Mary” Immaculate Confessions, the beacon of hope, highlights the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a source of guidance and inspiration for faithful people,” the Cathedral said in a statement. This year is especially important as it coincides with the Pilgrimage of Hope in the Year of Jubilee, an era of spiritual renewal and reflection.
Just a few miles from Los Angeles’ historic Philippine town, the cathedral features thousands of Filipino Catholics. According to Pew Research, there are over half a million Filipino-Americans living in the Los Angeles area.
Santa Cruzan was first held in Malolos, Bulacan, Philippines in the 1800s and was able to find the true cross that Jesus was said to be crucified as a religious procession commemorating the quest of Queen Helena of Constantinople and her son Constantine the Great. It has since become part of the Filipino tradition that focused on the youth and their dedication to the blessed Virgin Mary.
