As out-of-state emergency personnel return home after helping fight the Eaton and Palisades fires in Los Angeles County, one local firefighter is returning home with a newfound excitement: giving birth to triplets.
Zachary Griffin of the Kern County Fire Department was dispatched to Los Angeles County, along with dozens of other firefighters from the department. He said he left because his pregnant wife was scheduled for a 12-week ultrasound, but the couple had prepared for his absence.
“We had been preparing for the birth of the twins for about a month, so when we left the station, we knew there was a chance we would miss our ultrasound appointment,” Griffin said. “My wife and I knew I signed up to help people, so we decided to do it over FaceTime.”
Griffin’s wife was accompanied by a friend, and while they were riding in the firetruck, the friend called her on FaceTime. Everything was going smoothly as expected, but then I noticed something.
“I heard my wife in the background saying, ‘Is that what I think?’ And I was like, ‘Hey, let me in.’ what’s happening? And I heard the ultrasound technician say there were three,” the firefighter recalled.

Griffin said the couple was initially caught off guard by the revelation, as they had only expected to have two babies.
“For a second I thought I was going to have a flat tire,” he said. “When I saw on the ultrasound that I had three sacs, my jaw dropped. I was very excited, but even more shocked.”
Like many out-of-state crew members, the team plans to return home, and Griffin said he hopes to return to his pregnant wife.
“We’re very excited and it’s a blessing,” he said. “I’m going home and I look forward to seeing her whenever I get home.”
