Officials said efforts to protect two major institutions from the Eaton fire are making progress.
Don Freglia, director of operations for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, which is participating in the Eaton Fire response, said efforts to protect Mount Wilson have proven successful and he expects them to continue to do so. He said he is doing so.
“We are actively working there and so far there has been no loss of value at risk on Mount Wilson,” Freglia said. “We feel good about what we have to do on site tonight to keep the site safe.”
He said the fire also spread near NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, but said that was the priority and crews were “making good progress there as well.”
But the higher up in the mountains the gunfight goes, the more difficult the wind becomes, he said.
“We fly the aircraft up, but then the pilot has to come down because it’s too dangerous for the pilot,” he said. “So it’s a continuous evaluation, and if you can fly it, you’ve succeeded.”
The Eaton Fire burned 13,690 acres and approximately 5,000 structures in Altadena and Pasadena. Additional evacuation orders were issued Thursday afternoon as flames moved toward Mount Wilson.
Other mandatory evacuations were also lifted after city officials notified residents of Glenokes Canyon and Chevy Chase Canyon that it was safe to return to their homes.
