Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials were stunned Sunday when they discovered a variety of fireworks, knives, replica firearms and pepper spray inside travelers’ carry-on bags.
Around 10 p.m., a woman’s carry-on baggage was flagged at Los Angeles International Airport’s Terminal 4 security checkpoint after she was ticketed to Philadelphia.
The bag contained 82 consumer-grade fireworks, three knives, two replica firearms and a can of pepper spray, a surprising discovery for even the most experienced airport personnel, TSA said.
Officers called the Los Angeles World Airport Police Department, who questioned the passengers and seized the fireworks.
LAX TSA Federal Security Director Jason Pantages said, “The amount of contraband found in one carry-on bag is extremely alarming.” “This incident is a reminder to all travelers to double check the contents of their bags before coming to the airport.”
TSA reminds passengers that fireworks are never allowed onboard an aircraft in carry-on or checked baggage.
Replicas of knives and firearms must be transported as checked baggage. You are permitted to carry one 4-ounce container of pepper spray in your checked baggage with a safety mechanism to prevent accidental release.
However, if the spray contains more than 2% of tear gas by mass, it must be carried in checked baggage.
