Of the 73,000 homeless individuals living in the Greater Los Angeles area, an estimated 7% live inside the car, making them lifelines.
In a statement, organizers of the event on Friday said they hope to provide important interventions and enable struggling families and individuals to continue driving, maintain work, maintain schooling and maintain connections with essential services.
“Reliable transportation is essential to economic stability,” said Ray Drasnin, media coordinator at Fix-It Day. “A single breakdown can swirl into unemployment and will result in deeper economic difficulties. This event is about preventing that.”
Event partners include Petersen Automotive Museum, Chris’Auto Service, Automotive Parts Supplier Carparts.com, Safe Parking LA, Mobile Repairs Company Rench, Oils and Additives Company Liqui Moly, Lime Truck Food Catering, and Pacific Nexus.
Repairs are carried out through numerous volunteer mechanisms. Services include brake replacement, battery replacement, tire repairs and oil changes. Everything is free in Peterson from 8am to 5pm.
Participants will also receive a one-year membership with Carparts+, which offers street support and discounted service fees.
