A federal judge found Tuesday that Florida Attorney General James Usmierer had civilly contempted the court over her ruling to suspend a new state law that criminalizes people who live illegally in the United States to enter the state.
US District Judge Kathleen Williams ordered Usmeyer to show the cause of “why he should not be empt or approved” on April 29 for violating a temporary restraining order (TRO) from the court, but Williams ultimately found him unable to convince her.
“If you’re being held in a light empty, if it costs you to protect the rule of law and stand firmly behind President Trump’s agenda on illegal immigration,” Usmeyer said in a post on X on Tuesday.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the law in February, making President Donald Trump’s push for cracking down on illegal immigrants into the state misdemeanor.

However, on April 4, Williams issued a 14-day TRO in accordance with the law following the lawsuit filed by the Florida Immigration Coalition and other groups. She then extended the TRO another 11 days after learning that Florida Highway Patrol had arrested more than 12 people, including US citizens.
The court said on April 18 that Florida law enforcement officials were detained by TRO, preventing enforcement of criminal immigration laws.
The court also ordered the Attorney General to provide notice to all law enforcement officers.

However, on April 23, he added that the law enforcement community “there are no judicial orders… it properly suppresses you from enforcing immigration laws and “a legal and legitimate order does not currently prevent your agency from enforcing the laws.”
As a result, the court requested that Uthmeier show the cause why it should not be deemed empty for breaching the TRO.

Following his response, the court ruled that the litigators could not change the meaning of the words that suit them, and held that Uthmeier was emptied the court’s April 18 order to provide TRO to law enforcement officers regarding immigration law enforcement.
Therefore, the court ordered Uthmeier to file a biweekly report detailing arrest, detention or law enforcement cases regarding immigration laws that prohibit entry into Florida.

If an arrest was made under the law, Uthmeier was ordered to notify the court of details of the arrest.
