The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday filed criminal charges against the ex-boyfriend of a 17-year-old girl who was stabbed to death in Azusa last week.
Daniel Rodriguez, 18, of Azusa, was taken into custody Saturday and later charged with one count of murder.
Prosecutors claimed the suspect used a knife to commit the crime.
Rodriguez’s arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 8, and he is being held in jail in lieu of $2 million bail.
“We would like to express our deepest condolences to Angelina Gonzalez’s loved ones who are experiencing this senseless act of violence and unimaginable grief, especially this holiday season,” the District said. Atty. Hochman said in a news release Tuesday. “Our office’s Family Violence Unit will work to bring perpetrators to justice for victims and their families.”
The murder charge comes days after a Dec. 21 stabbing inside a home in the 300 block of North Soldano Avenue in Azusa.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a written statement that Azusa Police Department officers responded that Friday night to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.
Officers found a 17-year-old girl inside the home suffering from stab wounds. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died, according to the sheriff’s office.
The victim’s family identified her as Angelina Camilia Gonzalez.
Angelina’s stepfather, Robert Caraballo, told ABC7 that the suspect picked her up from a cheerleader party and took her to his home. Her family didn’t know where she was, but they were eventually able to locate her by tracking her cell phone.
“When I got there, there was already crime scene tape being put up, forensics being done, all kinds of work being done. And I ran up to the police officer and said, ‘Hey, my daughter’s in there. ” he said. You know, my daughter is there. trying to find her. She is not at home. ‘That’s when they told me, ‘Hold on a minute,”’ Caraballo told the station.
Angelina’s mother, Leticia Pimentel Caraballo, created a GoFundMe account to pay for her daughter’s funeral expenses.
The page also stated that Angelina will be celebrating her 18th birthday on January 7th.
“She had a great future ahead of her,” Pimentel Caraballo wrote. “She had a heart of gold. She was my perfect, gorgeous angel baby.”
“I don’t even have the words to say. I can’t even cope. I need her,” she added, adding, “Our family is devastated.”
