Former Cedars-Sinai Alumni/Gyn surrenders his license after sexual abuse complaints

Former Cedars-Sinai Medical Center obstetrician Barry J. Brock has waived his medical license following a charge of negligent care from the state medical board.

The 75-year-old Brock signed an agreement later last month to waive a license he held since 1978. The surrender took effect Wednesday.

Brock “doesn’t grant the de facto claim,” said his attorney Tracy Green, but he chose to waive his license rather than investing time and money in the hearing.

Under the terms of the agreement, Brock is prohibited from legally practicing medicine in California for the rest of his life.

Brock retired from medicine in August. Since then, at least 176 women have filed lawsuits alleging Cedars-sinai and other facilities where Brock intentionally concealed sexual abuse and misconduct.

The Bullock denied all allegations of fraud. OB-Gyn was a member of the Cedars-Sinai Physician Network until 2018 and held clinical privileges until mid-2024.

Cedars-Sinai confirmed in July that it had suspended its hospital privileges in the Block after receiving “concerns about complaints” from a former patient. His privilege ended several months later.

“The type of behavior he asserts about Dr. Barry Brock is against Cedars Sinai’s core values and the trust he strives to earn money with his patients every day,” the Medical Center said in a statement. “We recognize that legal procedures must take that course and continue to be committed to Cedars-Sinai’s sacred healing mission.”

The charges that led to his surrender of his license focused on patients who sought treatment for their withered eggs in 2018.

According to the complaint, the patient reported to the Block office in September 2018 an expansion and curette to remove remaining tissue from the uterus.

Brock ordered the patient to undress right in front of her eyes, the complaint stated, and did not wear gloves during the procedure.

The patient experienced severe pain during the visit and bleeding for two months thereafter, the complaint stated, and no follow-up was provided. When she visited a doctor’s assistant in November 2018, the complaint said she learned that Block had not successfully completed the expansion and curette.

The complaint alleged that Block did not administer sufficient painkillers, did not properly complete the procedure or followed up with pathological findings.

Bullock’s license settles the charges, but he is still facing civil lawsuits.

A lawsuit was filed last year on behalf of 167 women, with nine women suing former doctors earlier this month, claiming Brock often inappropriately groping her breasts and genitals with her bare hands during appointments and sexually harassing her.

“This is why these civil cases and these women are moving forward… he can’t avoid this,” said Lisa Esser, the attorney representing the nine plaintiffs. “He’ll be accountable.”
