Israel’s ongoing military campaign on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure could lead to strategic change as well as military escalation, according to retired Major Gen Amos Yadrin.
One of the architects behind the legendary 1981 strike against Iraq’s Osirak reactor, former director of the Israeli Military Intelligence Agency, said Israel should expand its political targets as well as military targets.
“Israel, on the one hand, has decided that it’s time to end the leadership of the evil axis: the head of the snake,” Yadrin told Fox News Digital. “At the same time, we’ll address the main issues there. This is the core.”
Yadrin had not said how long he thought the conflict would be dragged over. He did not openly call a change of government, but Yadrin suggested that the IDF take the government’s target “beyond the military level.”
“It’s not a one-day surgery. It looks like a week or two. But when we start a war, even if we start it very well, we don’t know when it will end.”

“We hope that the IDF’s achievements of dismantling Iran’s air defenses and decompose Iranian missile capabilities, ballistic missile capabilities, drone capabilities, and perhaps the targets of several regimes beyond the military level that Israel has begun will convince Iranians that they will stop.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio initially claimed he was not involved in Tehran’s first strike, but President Donald Trump appears to have wanted to pressure the weaker Israeli strikes to acquiesce at the negotiation table.
Both sides have become attackers over the US claim that Iran has no capacity to enrich the claim that it must have uranium and uranium for its civil nuclear programme.
“In my view, military operations aim for political purposes, and the political objective is an agreement with Iran, blocking the possibility of going to the border,” Yadrin said.
“We need a stronger agreement than the 2015 joint comprehensive action plan,” he said.

Yadrin, who flew one of the F-16s that destroyed Iraq’s nuclear facilities in 1981 in a one-night operation, revealed that Israel’s latest campaign was far more complicated.
“This wasn’t 1981,” he said. “Iran has learned. Their facilities are dispersed, buried in mountains and protected by advanced air defense. It’s not an overnight operation.”
He added, “There are sites that I don’t know if they’ll be destroyed or not.”
He said the recent attacks were the result of years of Intelligence reporting, as well as brave Mossad agents on Iran’s ground. Israel lured top Iranian commanders into the bunker, where they coordinated their response to Israel’s attacks and exploded the bunker.
“Every Intelligence Report that Israel has collected has made this operation very efficient against Iran’s nuclear program, and very similar to Israel’s destroying Hezbollah, since I was the Director of Intelligence Reports from 2005-2010. Unfortunately, the same Intelligence Reports Agency missed October 7, 2023.”

In fact, Israel’s past preventive strikes – the 1981 opera opera and the 2007 air strike on Syrian questionable reactors – is rapid, surgical and designed to neutralize singular targets. In contrast, Yadlin suggested that the current campaign could last for several weeks and could involve broader goals.

The operation is surrounded by Israeli defense officials as a continuation of the initiation doctrine established after the 1981 Osilak Strike.

Yadrin himself is a symbol of that doctrine. As one of eight pilots who jumped into Iraq over 40 years ago, he helped define Israel’s policy of preemptive action. This is a heritage that has been tested again under fundamentally different circumstances.

“This campaign is different from what the country did before,” emphasized Yadlin.
