Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has taken a formal step towards seeking his old job in 2026.
A campaign finance titled “Villanueva for Sheriff 2026” was recently registered with the California Secretary’s Office, indicating its intention to raise funds for the 2025-2026 election cycle. The registration shows potential plans to execute, but Villanueva has not made public the campaign or confirmed that he will be taking part in the poll.
When asked for comment, Villanueva told the Los Angeles Times that “there are some available next week.”

Villanueva, who served as LA County Sheriff from 2018 to 2022, has lost his re-election to current Sheriff Robert Luna. During his tenure, Villanueva faced widespread criticism of divisional controversy and legal combat, but has been active publicly since taking office, frequently heavy on law enforcement and county politics through social media and broadcast appearances.

Luna, who took office after beating Villanueva in a devastating election, has already declared her intention to seek re-election in 2026.
It is not immediately clear when the Villanueva Campaign Committee was registered.
