Morristown, N.J. — He won the New Jersey Democratic gubernatorial primary on Tuesday night.
The Associated Press predicts that Cheryl will win the Democratic primary and will be replacing Democrat government Phil Murphy, who was ordered again this year, teeing a race against three-time gubernatorial candidate and former GOP state legislator Jack Ciatarelli.
Cheryl wiped out the busy field of Democratic candidates, including Newark Mayor Steve Flop, New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller, former New Jersey Senator Steve Sweeney and Rep. Josh Gottimer.
Democrats and Republican candidates often aroused the name of President Donald Trump on the New Jersey campaign trail. It was Ciattarelli who landed Trump support as Democrats worked to compare the president’s vision with their own.

New Jersey, along with Virginia, is one of the two governor races in 2025. Both will be used by politicians and critics to assess how Americans respond to Trump’s second term ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

As they campaigned for the coveted nomination, the Democratic candidate walked the tiny line between committing to changing the status quo in Trenton based on Murphy’s legacy. Like Murphy, the Democratic candidate refused to make Trump’s executive order, his crackdown on illegal immigration, and cut the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The Democratic governor acted as the final line of defense on the Republican broad agenda, often rejecting Trump’s enforcement actions during his second term. By suing the Trump administration to unlock federal funds or refusing to adhere to ice summaries, many Democratic governors rumoured to have presidential ambitions for 2028, often leading the party’s resistance to Trump.

Trump again won center stage on Tuesday as Cheryl and Gottheimer had been questioned by press outlets about the protests and riots unfolding in Los Angeles.
When asked how she would handle the ongoing situation with Gavin Newsom in Los Angeles, Sheryl touted her military and law enforcement background, telling Fox News Digital that she “strongly supports keeping people safe and nationally safe, and she opposes the president who is trying to induce violence at home.”

“Governor Newsom has spiked law enforcement, and what Trump seems to be doing is trying to fuel the fire and actually make the situation violent and bad,” Sheryl told reporters after voting in Montclair on Tuesday morning. “That’s completely unacceptable.”
Gotheimer said it was “outrageous” for Trump to send the National Guard to California without Newsom’s request.
“The fact that the President sent troops from the National Guard for the first time since 1965 without a request from the governor is outrageous. It’s not a way to get close to this, being used to the habit of this administration.

The Democratic candidate threw support behind Baraka last month after being arrested for trespassing at a Newark ice facility. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) called it “beyond the strange political stunts,” but Baraka claims he has done nothing wrong.
Last week, Baraka filed a lawsuit against New Jersey US lawyer Alina Haba and Ricky Patel, an agent with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) “for false arrests, malicious prosecutions and honour and loss of honor.”

Vice President Kamala Harris won New Jersey as expected in 2024, but Trump scored almost five points improvements from his 2020 vote share, with Harris’ support dropping by about five points. He was acquired in New Jersey and had the biggest shaking at the northeast corner of the state. Hudson and Passey counties lead the pack.
