They were fierce Republican rivals a year and a half ago, but President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis were all smiling this week.
“The relationship between the governor and the president is fantastic,” DeSantis Communications Director Brian Griffin told Fox News Digital.
Griffin spoke with Fox News Digital the day after Trump and DeSantis toured what they called the Alligator Aracatraz with Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem.
Desantis, a two-term conservative governor who didn’t play Trump for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, used the emergency to seize the land and speed of the facility and encouraged him from Trump and his administration.

“Ron worked beautifully with Christie (Noem) and all of the people in Homeland Security, how many days did it come to fruition, Ron?” Trump said he was turning to the governor as he answered a reporter’s question.
“The new facility was in operation for eight days,” replied Desantis.

After the 2022 governor’s re-election landslide, DeSantis ran towards the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, officially launching a White House bid in the spring of 2023.
But even before he announced his candidacy, DeSantis was repeatedly attacked by Trump and his political allies.
The governor’s long-term targeting was successful. DeSantis was seen as Trump’s biggest threat in the Republican White House hopeful field. However, the governor saw his support worsen, and he ended his presidential bid last January after Trump’s disappointing second place finish at the Iowa Caucus.

DeSantis quickly supported Trump, helping to raise money for the then-president’s general election campaign, and gave a well-received speech at the Republican National Convention in Milluarkey, Wisconsin last summer.
When asked about his relationship with DeSantis, Trump added to reporters, “I’m going to say it’s 10. I think it’s 10,” and “It’s 9.9 because 9.9 is a small wound.”
Desantis wins laps in Florida’s key immigration law
DeSantis was extremely offensive about Trump supporting him with his radical immigration crackdown.
The governor signed a strict immigration measure earlier this year, ending a week-long standoff on the duel bill after a compromise brokered with the Republican leader in the Florida Legislature.
“This will be a multiplier of force,” DeSantis told Fox News later last week. “We are pleased to work with the federal government to meet President Trump’s mission.”
The governor proposed that the president visit the facility in an interview with Fox News.
“Invitation from me: we can land the Air Force. It’s fine,” DeSantis said. “I think the president was impressed by the guys doing this here.”
At the event, Trump emphasized, “Ron and I had a really great relationship for a long time. We had a few days off, but it didn’t last long.”
The president added that he and the governor “have a lot of respect for each other.”
DeSantis replied with praise, “You can call him.” [Trump] He wants to be useful to the governor at any time. ”

But some of the top figures on Trump’s political trajectory, including White House staffer Susie Wills, may still be out of the governor’s opinion.
Wills was once a political adviser to DeSantis before his extremely bitter dropout.
And, in signs of political friction, Florida’s Byron Donald also attended the event on Tuesday.
Donald launched a bid earlier this year to take over DeSantis, a term-limited in Florida’s 2026 gubernatorial election, landing Trump’s support even before he announced his candidacy.
DeSantis’ wife, Florida’s first lady Casey DeSantis, is running for her own governor, and earlier this year her husband said she will become a worthy successor.

Reporters asked if Casey DeSantis should run for governor, but the president simply says, “We’re doing well.”
Ron DeSantis immediately stepped in, noting that “I immediately supported him in January 2024. I raised one of his packs millions.”
