The Department of Defense is planning to build the largest federal immigration detention facility in the United States to date in Fort Bliss, Texas.

Pentagon spokesman Kingsley Wilson announced the project during a press conference Thursday, saying construction began in July.

“Since then, work has begun on the initial detention capacity of 1,000 illegal aliens, which is likely to be achieved between mid- to late August,” Wilson said. “When DOD achieves its first stand-up, it will complete construction of up to 5,000 beds in weeks and months.”

Wilson said the facility will become the largest variety in US history and will help “this critical mission: deportation of illegal aliens.”

The new facility is being established to support President Donald Trump’s executive order to protect Americans from invasion.

The announcement follows a recent statement from the governor of Indiana, and the state will build a facility called “Speedway Slammer” at the Miami Corrections Center between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne.

Named in connection with Indiana’s race heritage, including the Indianapolis 500, “Speedway Slammer” runs 1,000 immigrants.

“We are proud to work with President Trump and Secretary Noem as we are removing the worst and worst with this innovative partnership,” Brown said in a statement Tuesday. “Indiana has adopted a comprehensive and collaborative approach to combat illegal immigration and will continue to lead among the states.”

The project’s funding comes from a settlement bill signed by Trump last month, which he was called “one big, beautiful bill.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the law would fund the 287(g) program and promote immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) and local government cooperation, as well as 80,000 ice detention levels.

While continuing its deportation campaign, the Trump administration is encouraging undocumented immigrants without additional self-reported criminal records.

The aerial view of the Immigration Detention Center, known as the “Alligator Alcatraz,” will be located on July 7, 2025 at the Dade Collier Training and Transition Airport in O’Coupe, Florida.

According to the DHS, individuals voluntarily leaving the country are eligible for $1,000 incentives and free travel, which could allow legal re-entry in the future.

Another facility, unofficially known as the “Alligator Alcatraz,” opened this summer under the supervision of federal officials and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. It serves as a staging centre for deportation.

The facilities that were originally funded by the state will also receive support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It currently houses 2,000 people and is expected to double the capacity. Deportation flights began later last month.

The facility has been remodeled from the decommissioned airport in the Everglades. According to WJHL, the second center may follow. State officials have faced criticism from immigration and environmental advocacy groups over the location and purpose of the facility.
