Officials confirmed by the KTLA have killed four people in a violent single-vehicle rollover crash in the San Bernardino County desert Sunday morning.
A spokesman for the California Highway Patrol in Burstow said it happened around 7:45am on the I-40 freeway near Milemarker 30.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver lost control for unknown reasons, heading from the road to desert territory and the car was moving west down the highway.
Once off-roaded, the car lost control completely, according to CHP, and rolled what was said to be “a few times.”
Three people were kicked out of the car and killed in shock, and a fourth patient died at the scene a few minutes later.
According to CHP’s Incident Report Log, one patient was said to be trapped and partially protruding from the vehicle that landed on that side.
Reporting logs also said officers closed all westbound lanes until around 8:48am when at least one lane reopened.
After 2:30pm on Sunday, CHP Barstow posted to X, informing drivers that one of the highway lanes is still closed in the area.
“We’re making multiple crashes along westbound Interstate 40 between the desert Oasis Rest area and the east of Hector Road,” read X-Post. “#2 (slow lanes) will be closed in certain locations. Don’t forget to move or slow due to emergency vehicles at work.”
Details were limited and staff did not immediately provide patient identity or further information regarding other crashes listed on the X-Post.
The CHP said the accident is under investigation.
