Four Sanctuary Mayors prepare to avoid “embarrassing” council testimony

Mayors of Boston, Chicago, Denver and New York City are preparing for a high stakes hearing before a House committee on oversight and government.

“The Mayor of Sanctuary owes Americans an explanation of urban policies that violate federal immigration laws by putting public safety at risk and bringing dangerous, illegal foreigners to the streets,” said James Commer, the Committee on Surveillance and Government Reform, as chairman of the press release announcing the hearing.

The hearing, which takes place before the full committee, has seen increased surveillance since President Donald Trump regained control of the White House in January, as a jurisdiction that restricts cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Trump appears to be making the situation swiftly at his southern border, but attention is being paid to his promised deportation efforts. This is a useful process when state and local agencies work in collaboration with federal authorities.

However, some cities have now taken a long-standing opposition approach, refusing to comply with federal enforcement measures such as detainees placed on illegal immigrants by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.

The policies of these sanctuaries have often sparked controversy. Most notably, it is triggered by a small number of famous crimes committed by illegal immigrants who have been permitted to sue deportation.

“These reckless policies in Democrat-run cities and our nation’s states have been too many preventable tragedy,” Comer said in the release. “They also put ice agents at risk who are forced to take more difficult enforcement actions in jurisdictions that refuse to work with federal immigration authorities.”

Now, mayors of the four largest sanctuaries of cities seek to justify their policies in front of hostile councils. One report from Politico says the mayor is trying to avoid the “embarrassing” episodes that plague several Ivy League presidents who testify about anti-identical ties at Campaign in 2023.

The report notes that all four mayors have worked with advisors and lawyers to prepare to compile the documents ahead of Wednesday’s hearing, and believes University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magil has been banished after her appearance at the 2023 hearing, which attempts to avoid similar missteps.

The hearing could shake up the political futures of Brandon Johnson in Chicago, Eric Adams in New York, Michelle Wu of Boston, and Mike Johnston in Denver.

However, the Politico report points out that not all mayors will sideline their support for the Sanctuary Act.

“I just want to make sure people understand that [this is] Johnson told reporters last week when he spoke about Chicago.

Meanwhile, Adams may try to promote his recent cooperation, including his decision to sign an executive order that would allow Ice Agents to return to New York City’s Rikers Island Prison Complex.

The move drew Yle, Governor Kathy Hawtle, whom Adams threatened to take office, but she later retreated from the plan and instead pledged reforms aimed at governing the city’s mayor’s power.

Comer has promised that the four mayors will be asked for answers, but they still haven’t seen how they’re with committee members.

“Policies in Boston, Chicago, Denver and New York City prioritize foreigners who are illegal to criminally do over Americans,” Comer said in the release. “This is unacceptable and their leaders must be accountable. We will seek answers from these mayors and look into measures to enforce compliance with federal immigration laws.”
