The cross was one of the items left at the roadside memorial to commemorate the deaths of four people who fell crashes over the weekend in Santa Ana.
The single-vehicle crash was reported on Segars Strom Avenue near Townsend Street, 11:30pm on Saturday. The vehicle was split into half after hitting the wood, with the center split into what the authorities said was high speed.
Santa Ana Police said Monday that four people were killed and two injured in the crash. Details regarding the situation of the injured victim were not immediately available.
“It’s likely that alcohol and drugs were the factor,” said Natalie Garcia, the public intelligence agency of the Santa Ana Police Department. “It’s true that the vehicle was driving at high speeds.”
The crash kicked two people out and the other three were locked in the vehicle.
Some of the vehicle residents are teenagers, and some are from the Santa Ana Unified School District. Friends and classmates left crosses, flowers and other items at the crash location during a candlelight vigil on Sunday night.
“We were always there for each other,” said my friend April Marie. “I wish I could spend more time with them.”
Investigators are searching for surveillance footage from a nearby home.
The Santa Ana Unified School District has issued a statement.
“The Santa Ana Unified School District is heartbroken to share that students from Valley High School and Car Intermediate School were involved in a tragic car accident this weekend that claimed four lives and injured two others,” the district said. “Our entire SAUSD community is devastated by this unimaginable loss. We express our deep sadness to the victims’ families and loved ones.
“We are working closely with local law enforcement as we continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, and we are focusing on supporting students, staff and families affected by the tragedy.”
