A funeral was held Thursday for a sergeant at the Los Angeles Police Department who was killed last month on the 405 highway in Bel Air.
Sergeant. Shiou Deng, 53, was remembered for his sacrifice, kindness and sense of humor during his funeral at the grassy spirits of Covina Forest.
The service was held when his family met with friends, colleagues, LAPD chief Jim McDonnell and Mayor Karen Bass.
Reminiscing Den’s “a bright smile and heartfelt laughter that killed the room,” the 27-year LAPD veteran showed perseverance and compassion when serving the masses, especially with the LAPD’s spiritual evacuation forces.
“That mission requires a very special kind of person, someone with patience, someone with compassion, someone who can come in someone’s worst moment and settle in confusion,” explained McDonnell.
The LAPD chief said Deng always found a way to lift people up, recalling the humorous moments Deng created while working with his LAPD colleagues.
“Even now, he still makes people feel good,” McDonnell said. “Sergeant Den lived his life like most of us wanted us to do with humor, purpose and kindness.”
Mayor Karen Bass called Deng a “real leader” who cared about his officers and others.
“He was the gold standard for selflessness and the generosity and care of thousands of Los Angeles Police Department officers who risked their lives in the service of others,” the mayor said.
“We always respect his memory and today, the city of Los Angeles stands with you every day,” Bass added.
Initially, in response to a single vehicle crash, officials at the agency’s West Los Angeles office responded to a southbound highway just north of Moraga Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
“Officers found Toyota pickups… disabled in HOV and No. 1 lane,” according to a statement from CHP. “Immediately after the crash, Sergeant LAPD. Shiou dengg arrived at the marked patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated, stopped behind Toyota, partially blocking the same lane. As a sergeant. Den left his car, a Nissan sedan driven by Mario Bickham struck the patrol vehicle, and then attacked Sergeant. dengg. ”
Garcia, the Toyota driver, was standing outside his car and was attacked. He died at the scene. Den was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood, where he was declared dead.
