Funeral services will be held in the coming weeks for three Los Angeles County Sheriff detectives who were killed when the explosive device disappeared during an exam earlier this month.
Sheriff’s detectives Joshua Kelly Ecklund, Victor Rems and William Osborne were murdered on July 18th at a training center in the Biscales area.
The first aide to be placed on rest is Osborn, a 33-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Bureau, as service is scheduled for August 5th at Yoruba Linda.
The funeral of Kelly Ecklund, a 20-year veteran who left his wife and seven children, will be held in Santa Clarita on August 7th.
Remus, who came from a long civil servant in his family, will be placed to rest in Chino on August 12th.
At family requests, all services are private and there are no public or media accommodations.
Sheriff Robert Luna said last week that arson investigators in his department would assist Santa Monica police on July 17 to recover the rena bullets found in the building storage units in an apartment building near Bay Street and Lincoln Boulevard. The device was inspected, X-ray and considered inert, but sheriff officials recovered the rena bullet and took it to the Viscales facility in the 1000 block of Northeast Avenue.
The reason why the single hand-en-en-mut exploded remains unknown, but Luna said the investigation determined that only one device had exploded.
The location of the second hand bullet remains unknown. Luna said the department has launched an internal investigation into handling the situation.
