A week after making national headlines for supporting the Menendez brothers’ countersuit, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón went a step further, announcing he would support the brothers’ request for clemency from Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Eric Menendez and Lyle Menendez asked Newsom for clemency on Monday, and Gascon’s office supported the request in a letter to Newsom, the district attorney’s office announced in a news release.
“I strongly support clemency for Eric Menendez and Lyle Menendez, who are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole. “We have been working to create new programs to help people reintegrate into society,” Gascón said.

The clemency decision now rests with Newsom, but Menendezes could be released if the judge agrees to their re-sentencing request, which Gascón has also sought.
If approved, the Menendezs could be sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 1989 shooting deaths of their parents in their Beverly Hills home.
A resentencing hearing is scheduled for Dec. 11.
