The PGA Tour has decided to hold next month’s Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades due to wildfires in the Los Angeles area.
“The PGA Tour remains focused on the safety and well-being of those affected by this unprecedented natural disaster in the Los Angeles metropolitan area,” the PGA Tour said in a statement Thursday. “We are grateful for the life-saving efforts of first responders and the tireless efforts made to bring an end to these tragic wildfires.”
The PGA Tour has announced that the Genesis Invitational will be held at a different location from February 10th to 16th and will announce the venue soon.
“The PGA Tour is identifying the most effective ways the tournament can support the Los Angeles community and the ongoing relief efforts,” the PGA Tour said, encouraging fans to show their support at pgatour.com/supportla encouraged.
The Riviera, which is scheduled to host the men’s and women’s golf events at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, was subject to an evacuation order on Jan. 7. The tour said in an earlier memo to players that its courses were not directly affected by the Palisades fire.
The PGA Tour’s options included postponing the tournament, holding it at another location or holding it as planned. Considerations include bringing players and fans to the Pacific Palisades, where recovery efforts are underway, a lack of nearby lodging, and hosting a golf tournament amid one of the deadliest natural disasters in the region’s history. The fire killed at least 10 people and burned 23,713 acres and numerous homes, businesses and landmarks in the Pacific Palisades and west along the Pacific Coast Highway toward Malibu. As of Thursday afternoon, the fire was 22% contained.
Evacuation orders or warnings are in effect for many areas in the Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Calabasas, Brentwood and Encino. More than 12,000 structures remain under threat. Authorities estimate more than 5,000 structures were destroyed or damaged, including many homes.
The country club and golf course is wedged between Pacific Palisades and the eastern edge of Brentwood, located at 1250 Capri Drive, approximately two blocks east of West Sunset Boulevard and one block northwest of San Vicente Boulevard. The course opened in 1927 as the Los Angeles Athletic Club Golf Course, and the main clubhouse, built in the Spanish Revival style, was completed in 1928.
The PGA Tour event, originally known as the Los Angeles Open, is where Tiger Woods made his amateur tour debut in 1992, when he was a sophomore in high school. The Genesis Invitational has been hosted by Woods since 2019, with proceeds going to the tournament. Nonprofit TGR Foundation.
Riviera has been the venue for the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Senior Open, and NCAA Championships.
Debuting as the Los Angeles Open at Los Angeles Country Club in 1926, the tournament was held at various courses in the Los Angeles area until settling at Riviera Country Club in 1973. Known as the home of Jack Nicklaus’ professional debut, it has hosted 25 tournaments. World Golf Hall of Fame Champions, Tournaments and Riviera have experienced many important moments in golf history.
