George Lucas peeped at the Lucas Museum at Comic-Con

George Lucas had a comic compote, so it was strong in San Diego over the weekend. Star Wars creators join Oscar-winning artist Doug Cian, Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm, and Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and panel moderator Queen Latifa, while Angelenos and the museum scores hope to advance the museum’s advancement.

“We are here today, because my dear friend Goerge wanted to create a space that could be inspired by the same art that everyone inspired him,” Queen Latifah told me to introduce him to Lucas. Also light on specific details (such as specific opening dates), the panel presented interesting discussions of upcoming museums that attracted more than 6,000 to Hall H on the final day of this year’s Comic-Con. According to Lucas, the creative mind spoke of the importance of the art of storytelling (telling the story of society) and its shared beliefs, sharing some of the highlights of the museum’s collection.

Lucas spoke to the Comic-Con crowd about the museum’s mission and explained that he has worked with hundreds of illustrators in his career, but lamented the fact that they do not receive sufficient recognition. For this reason, he said his museum would become “the temple of the art of people.” Chian said the Lucas Museum “hopes to inspire the next Norman Rockwell or Frank Frazetta.”

And now we are looking for a little background to the museum itself. Now you may be familiar with the lush spaceship that has landed in the expo park between the Natural History Museum and the LA Memorial Coliseum. The curvy buildings topped with solar panels and gardens add something distinctly different to the architectural scene in LA. After Los Angeles was selected as a museum home, he worked on the first broken museum in March 2018 with a $100 million museum (San Francisco and Chicago were the other candidates). However, delays, including pandemic-related supply chain issues, pushed the opening day back from 2021 to 2022 to 2023 to 2025, eventually (fingers crossed!) 2026.

Located on 11 acres, the 5-storey 300,000-square-foot museum will be completed, with not only gallery spaces, but two state-of-the-art theatres, classrooms, libraries, dining options and a gift shop. Outside, lush landscaping is a draw to itself. The green space doubles as a park open to everyone, and no tickets are required.

Within the gallery, there is more than, as you would expect, institutionalized shrines in Star Wars. In fact, Monica’s “story art” section of the museum reflects the collection Lucas has accumulated over the past 50 years, and consists of tens of thousands of works that reflect the importance of illustrated storytelling. Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, Jack Kirby, R. There are works that make more modern names like Clam, Beatrix Potter, North Carolina, photographer Dorothea Lange and cartoonist Alison Beckdel, under the same roof, in short, as everyone is. Highlights from the recently released collection include original peanut strips from the 1950s and 60s, original splash pages from Black Panther (1968), and the first ever Flash Gordon comic strip.

But don’t worry, Star Wars Fans: The museum also has Lucas’ archives. Think of props, costumes, concept art and more that trace the trajectory of Lucas’ filmmaking career.
