Many riders will need to tap their transit cards to disembark to Los Angeles Union Station to curb crime and crack down on fare Everders with LA Metro’s latest efforts.
The TAP exit program at Union Station will take effect Tuesday and affects the subway and D subways.
Riders will need to tap the card on turntile as they exit the subway and head towards the main concourse towards the second floor.
Those who paid in advance can finish seamlessly, but those who have not been able to face the possibility of stopping at the gate and receiving warnings or quotes, or even remove them entirely from the system.
If you did not pay first, but have a valid tap card at the end, the fare will be deducted upon departure. However, Metro officials say this is still a violation of Metro’s code of conduct.
The North Hollywood Metro station sign advises passengers that they need to “tap” and leave the station.
Metrolink riders can already scan tickets to enable free transfers in LA Metro, but they will need to scan again when they exit at the required station.
The Tap to Exit program is already deployed along the B Line to North Hollywood Station and downtown Santa Monica Station along the E Line.

Last summer, Metro Board approved plans to implement TAP and exits at all 10 ending stations, with some stations installing strong security gates.
The war on fare avoidance follows complaints about drug use, violence and other crimes against the metro system.

After the establishment of the Exit program from TAP in North Hollywood, Metro officials reported a 40% reduction in complaints via the Transit Watch app.
