After surviving the Palisades fire in January, beloved Getty Villa will resume to a sold-out crowd on Friday.
According to a statement on January 8th, the villa managed to escape the fire as the fire burned on January 7th. After nearly five months of closure, the museum announced plans to open the doors again on May 19th.
Officials say the site “may look different to visitors” after “large” cleanup and recovery efforts, but guests still seem eager to come back. According to the website, admission reservations for Getty Villa are sold out until Monday, July 7th.
Starting Friday, visitors will be able to experience the debut of their latest exhibition, The Kingdom of Pylos: Warrior Princes of Ancient Greece.
According to the museum, the “Pyros Kingdom” was the first major North American exhibit to focus on the Michaelans. The exhibition features clay tablets written in “Linear B” and the Pylos Combat Agate, which is said to be one of the best examples of glyphiart.
The opening also explores the gardens and architecture through sampling its ancient collections and its art, architecture and garden tours.
Timothy Potts, director of the Getty Museum, said in a May release, “We are extremely grateful for the support we received from the museum community as we work towards reopening the Getty Villa Museum. “We look forward to welcoming visitors and exploring our latest exhibition, the Kingdom of Pilos, and our precious collection of antiques this summer.”
Guests can visit the museum for free on a limited schedule, and open from 10am to 5pm on Friday through Monday, and bookings will be available for online reservations and attendance will be limited to 500 people per day.
The villa is only accessible via the Pacific Coast Highway. Parking is $25.
