House GOP centres of major battlefield districts, R-Neb and Don Bacon, announced Monday that he will not seek re-election next year.
“After 30 years in the Air Force and 10 years in Congress, it’s time to spend my future with the love of my life, our four children and our amazing grandchildren. Thank you, Nebraska!” Bacon announced Monday.
Bacon’s announcement comes as Congress is working overtime to pass President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” with the July 4 deadline. Through the settlement process, Megabil aims to implement the president’s major campaign promises, including tax cuts, immigration reform and energy production.
Moderate Republicans have built a reputation for backing Trump’s agenda in the House. Bacon eventually voted with his Republican colleagues to pass one big beautiful bill law last month, but the Nebraska Republicans were concerned about the impact of the proposed Medicaid cuts.

Bacon said earlier this month that if it cuts its AIDS relief program, it would vote against the White House’s proposal to withdraw. Last month he was the only Republican to vote against the House bill to change the name of the permanent Trump in the Gulf Bay. Bacon, a loyal Ukrainian supporter, criticizes Trump’s position on the war with Russia.
Republican officials have shown he is “no” about rescue measures backed by Trump
Sen. Tom Tillis (RN.C.) announced on Sunday that he will not seek re-election next year. Like Bacon, Tillis was willing to take Trump and the Republicans down on important issues, including one big beautiful bill law. Tillis was one of two Republicans who voted against a procedural vote on the Senate bill this weekend.
Bacon has represented Nebraska’s second legislative district since 2017. He was re-electioned in 2024 with less than 2% points.

Kamala Harris’ former vice president won the district in 2024 nearly five percent points. Nebraska is one of just two states that divide votes at voting colleges in presidential elections by Congressional districts.
Bacon’s Congressional District was already a highly targeted House seat for Democrats ahead of the highly competitive 2026 midterm elections.
“The writing has been on the wall for several months,” said Madison Andras, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), on Friday.
