Technology issues caused ground outages Wednesday night on all United Airlines flights for Chicago and many other major hubs across the United States.

All United Airlines flights to Chicago have been suspended at the airport departing around 6:30pm, according to an alert on the FAA website.

Ground delays have been caused due to technical issues in which United Airlines houses information about each flight, communicates it to other systems, and communicates it to the systems used by airlines to systems that calculate weight and track flight times.

The halt, which is not related to cybersecurity, began shortly after 5pm, a United Airlines spokesperson said.

According to the FAA, as of 8:45pm, United flights departing from O’Hare were 120 minutes late.

Just before the 9pm central time, the company said the underlying issues had been resolved and it was reeling over the flight backlog and re-moving travelers. Along with airports in Newark and Denver, ground stops are enabled at O’Hare Airport in Chicago.

“We are working with our customers to take our customers to their destination after tech disruptions Wednesday evening. The underlying technology issues have been resolved. Our team is working to recover normal operations while we expect the remaining delays,” the spokesman said.

In a statement to NBC Chicago, the company cited the “technology issue” behind the ground stop.

“Because of technology issues, we are holding United’s mainline flights at their departure airport,” the company said. Safety is our number one priority and we work with our customers to reach our destination. ”
