The nonprofit Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles held a special service Friday to honor former President Jimmy Carter.
The service, held at the organization’s headquarters in Bellflower, reflected on the life of the 39th U.S. president and the lives of those he influenced.
“Jimmy Carter had a heart for people like me,” Jose Tovar said, fighting back tears.
Tovar recalled how special he felt when he met the former president as a teenager in 1995. Carter was part of the Habitat for Humanity construction crew that built Tovar’s family their first home, which they still own today.
“What an amazing experience that the president and first lady knew me!” Tovar said.
Rosa Vicencio and her daughter Elizabeth met the Carters in 2007 when the former president helped build a home in San Pedro. Vinencio said the home was “life-changing,” allowing her family to grow and thrive without the burden of high housing costs. This is what this nonprofit specializes in.
“In many ways, Habitat was the perfect expression of Mr. Carter’s lifelong belief that caring for others is a responsibility we all have. Not for self-promotion or praise, but because it’s the right thing to do.” That’s why,” the L.A. County supervisor said. Janice Hahn.
As a final tribute, those who attended the service signed a door similar to the ones Mr. Carter installed in hundreds of homes across the country. Leave a note of thanks to a man whose gift of giving defined his 100 years on earth.
