Half of the 4,000 National Guard troops deployed in Los Angeles

Federal officials from the Pentagon have confirmed that half of the 4,000 federal members of the California State Guard deployed in Los Angeles have been released, but 2,000 security guards and 700 active-duty Marines remain in the city.

The controversial decision to federalize the military comes after it exploded downtown in early June and protested against the crackdown on federal immigrants in LA County.

Once they arrived, the troops were tasked with protecting federal buildings and protecting federal immigration agents during enforcement.

The state took the Trump administration to court, where a federal judge ruled that the president acted illegally when he made the National Guard federal government without demand from Gov. Gavin Newsom. However, the decision was later overturned by the Court of Appeals, reverting military control to Trump while the lawsuit remains ongoing.

Newsom continues to criticize both the court decision and President Trump himself, pointing out that security guards have been separated from family and other essential duties, “working as a pawn for Los Angeles president.”

The site was held for immigration enforcement work on an agricultural farm on July 10th, 2025.

“Although nearly 2,000 people have begun demobilization, the rest of the security guards will continue without any mission, without any mission, to help the community,” the governor’s office posted on X.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said, but it is not entirely clear why federal officials suddenly ended their 60-day deployment of 2,000 security guards.

“The lawlessness in Los Angeles has subsided thanks to our troops that have stepped up to answer the call.”

La Mayor Karen Bass has issued a statement praising Angelenos for demobilizing the military.

“This happened because people in Los Angeles were united and standing strong,” Bass said. “We organized peaceful protests, came together at rally and took the Trump administration to court, all of which led to today’s hideout.”

So far, no information has been provided about the remaining security guards and Marines will remain in the area.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
