Law enforcement officials said Monday that video showed Hannah Kobayashi, the Hawaiian who disappeared after landing at LAX last month, crossing the border into Mexico.
Officials said there was no evidence of foul play in her disappearance.
A senior law enforcement official told NBCLA that “she is an adult and could choose to go missing,” and detectives believe Kobayashi should contact authorities to ensure she is safe and free of her own freedom. He added that he hopes to be able to confirm that he is traveling voluntarily.
Investigators say Border Patrol video shows Kobayashi leaving the U.S. near Tijuana between Nov. 12 and 13, and about a day later, Kobayashi’s family last seen her in a text message. He said he had contacted him.
There has been no communication with her since then, and authorities say Kobayashi may have left his phone somewhere in Los Angeles.
Last week, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell publicly reiterated the department’s initial findings in the search for Kobayashi, 30, who died on Nov. 8 after her flight from Hawaii landed at LAX.
