Harris holds the lead in the hypothetical California governor race, poll

According to a California Politics/Emerson University poll released Thursday, former Vice President Kamala Harris earned a greater lead than the rest of the field if he participated in the 2026 race for the California governor.

A survey of 1,000 registered voters was conducted between April 12 and 14, and included 18 hypothetical candidates in the June 2026 primary election.

Thirty-one percent of those planning to vote found that she would support Harris if she were to participate in the race. Democrat Katie Porter continues at 8%, with 4% supporting Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.

“California’s 2026 Governor Primary depends on whether Harris runs or not. Other candidates like Katy Porter are conditional on whether the former vice president enters the race.” “Harris wins 49% of the Democrats, and Porter wins 13%. Without Harris in the race, Porter’s Democrat support will rise to 21%, making it the early frontline in the busy sector.”

But voters are split over whether Harris should run. 50% said former California Attorney General and the US Senator should enter the race, while 50% said they shouldn’t.

Other issues

The vote also asked voters to weigh several other topics, including Gavin Newsom’s political future, President Trump’s tariff war, and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Fifty-nine percent of those surveyed said Newsom should not run for president in 2028, but 41 percent said they think he should. If it breaks down by party affiliation, 61% of registered Democrats believe Newsom should be carried out, while 78% of Republicans and 75% of independents don’t.

Polls show that California voters generally view presidential tariffs as taxes on consumers, rather than 60% to 22%, than taxes on trading partners. 18% believe that neither is.

Again, party affiliations shift numbers.

“The majority of Democrats, 77%, and half of independent voters view tariffs as taxes on consumers, while 48% of Republican voters see them as taxes on foreign countries,” Kimball added.

As for 2028 LA Summer Games, 32% are very interested in the game, 44% are somewhat interested, and 24% are not interested at all.

The majority of California voters (58%) would like to see the Olympics first-hand if they can afford it, but 42% aren’t.
