An Orange County woman says she is traumatized by a sexual assault, also described as a hate crime, at a Westminster Walmart.
The woman, 43-year-old Maribel Vergara, said the suspect, identified as Aaron Aubrey Nevis, grabbed her by the buttocks and told her, “You can do whatever you want because you’re Mexican.” You don’t have any rights. ”
Vergara said he usually carries pepper spray but did not have it to use against the alleged attacker. Vergara primarily speaks Spanish, but she said she understood it better than she spoke English and was able to clearly understand what the attackers were saying.
She claimed that he also used his tongue and made vulgar gestures at her.
Minutes after the 911 call, police arrived at the store and arrested Nabies on suspicion of sexual assault and a hate crime, a felony, Vergara said.
“We think about the police officers: ‘How would our mothers and grandmothers feel if the police officers got there?’ They showed compassion for her,” said Cmdr. Ta. Michael Harvey, of Westminster Police Station, said: “As with any crime, we want the public to know that this will not be tolerated.”
Vergara said her reason for speaking out was to prevent the man from targeting others in the future.
She said everyone has rights regardless of nationality.
