Joshua Brokart, 34, has been appointed to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office in Amite, southeast Louisiana, after allegedly fatally shooting his older parents, Priscilla and Mark Brokart.
Brokert was arrested in Los Angeles the day after the Louisiana Sheriff’s Office announced he was searching for him after a welfare check at his parents’ home. Authorities say they found the body of their 66-year-old mother and their 75-year-old father, who is the property, inside the house. Louisiana officials issued two arrest warrants for first-degree murder.
In a news release, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrested Brocart after a traffic stop, noting a white Ford E-150 van parked in the 5400 block of Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. The vehicle “consistent with the description of the murder vehicle being sought by Louisiana,” the department said.
“In the course of the lawmaker’s investigation, they discovered allegedly possessing a firearm loaded with a body armor and a number of other items, including attack rifles,” the department said.
It is likely that Brokart had fled to California within three days of the murder, the department said. Louisiana officials estimate that Brokart’s parents died on March 31 or April 1. The Tangipa Hoa Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed Brokart’s arrest in Los Angeles in an updated news release on Facebook.
“The reason for the crime is still unknown,” a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. It is unclear why Brokart fled to California, but the department said the Tangipa Hoa Parish Sheriff’s Office “warned several law enforcement agencies in Southern California.”
Brocato was booked on multiple suspected gun crimes, including possession of a loaded, unregistered firearm and possession of assault weapons, the Sheriff’s Department said. Brokart was booked at Marina del Rey station without bail and has a court date Tuesday, the department said.
According to a news release, Los Angeles officials worked with the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office to move Brokart to Louisiana.
