Defense Secretary Pete Hegses has announced that the Navy Oil Tanker, named after gay rights leader Harvey Milk, will be renamed after Medal of Honor winner Oscar V. Peterson.
“We’re removing politics from the naming of ships,” he wrote to X as well as a video announcing the movement.
Milk was shot dead at San Francisco City Hall by California’s first openly gay politician and former San Francisco director Dan White. The ship, which is the fleet’s replenishment Euler, was originally named after him in 2016 under President Barack Obama.

He served in the Navy for four years in the Korean War, but left because of sexuality.
Peterson was awarded the Medal of Honor after his death after dying from his wounds in self-sacrifice that saved his life during the battle in World War II.
“People are proud of the ships they are sailing,” Hegses said of the change. “We’re not renaming the ships politically. This isn’t about political activists, unlike previous administrations.”

After 20 years in the Navy, Peterson was in charge of running steam engines at the USS Neo Show when he was exposed to Japanese fires in the Philippines in 1942.
On May 7, 1942, Neosho was severely damaged during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Peterson and the rest of his repair party were severely injured, but Peterson was able to close four bulkhead steam valves. He had been burned three times in the process, but the movement kept the boat floating. On May 11, USS Henley rescued 123 survivors from Neosho, and Peterson died of wounds two days later.

The name change removes the DEI and removes the “awakening” policy from the Department of Defense, in a push from Heggs.

When the move was first reported earlier this month, Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) called the move “a shameful, vindictive erase of those who tried to break barriers for all to pursue American dreams.”
“It is my hope that the Navy will rethink this terrible decision just as the rest of us celebrate the month of joy of pride,” Pelosi said in a statement.
