Henry explains how Tuesday’s winds will affect Malibu gunfights

High wind conditions in Southern California will continue to impact Tuesday as firefighters continue to battle a wildfire that broke out Monday night and quickly exploded in Malibu.

KTLA meteorologist Henry DiCarlo said during the early morning hours before the sun comes up, “we’re seeing what looks like a decent area where the winds aren’t an issue at this point.”

“Generally speaking, fires tend to start moving downhill at night and uphill during the day, but this all has to do with temperature and humidity, because it’s more humid at night. , which means it can hold a little bit more air, “a little bit more moisture and a lower temperature,” Henry said.

The Franklin Fire broke out around 10:45 p.m. Monday, but as of 4 a.m. Tuesday, 1,822 homes had burned.

“As the sun comes up, there’s going to be a big change in temperature and humidity. That’s why these wildfires usually grow or at least grow because the humidity is low and the heat is high and that basically just adds fuel to the fire. We’re seeing it get more intense during the day,” Henry said.

He said the heat rises as the sun rises and the fire moves upwards in search of the hottest, driest spot.

As of 3:45 a.m. Dec. 10, the Franklin Fire has grown to more than 1,600 acres in the foothills of Malibu amid a high wind weather event with a Red Flag Potentially Dangerous Situation (PDS) warning. “Typically between about 8 a.m. and about 10 a.m., the conditions are perfect for the fire to take a second step where it covers more area, becomes more aggressive and winds become more of an issue. “The fires will be more explosive during the day,” Henry said.

Firefighters have not yet brought the blaze under control, and it is unclear how many buildings have been damaged or destroyed.
