Weekend motorists should be careful. The southbound lanes of the 605 Freeway will be closed for weekend renovations in the Downey and Norwalk areas.
Caltrans announced it will close Highway 605 between Interstate 5 in Downey and Firestone Boulevard in Norwalk for an extended weekend for resurfacing. All southbound lanes will be closed Friday and Sunday night, with some lanes closed for the remainder of the weekend until 5 a.m. Monday.
North-South Interstate 5, which connects to the southbound 605 Freeway, will be closed over the weekend, including the Florence Avenue and Telegraph Road on-ramps until early Monday morning.
Motorists using Highway 605 will be rerouted through the surface road.
Real-time closure status can be found on the Caltrans QuickMap website.
According to an announcement from the California Department of Transportation, more than 250,000 vehicles per day pass through the section of the 605 Freeway where construction is taking place. Alternative routes include southbound Highways 110 and 710 and State Route 57.
The closure is part of the Super 605 Freeway Corridor Project, which aims to rehabilitate Highway 605 from Long Beach to the San Gabriel Valley. At least 14 additional closures are expected over successive weekends and into 2025, but no dates have been announced.
